Six Quick Tips to improve your WordPress SEO to be ranked on Google

I have a lot of clients ask me how I got my business presence on Google without paying for Google Ads. *DRUMROLL PLEASE* I do so using SEO! I do get referrals from word of mouth and social media but Google has always been a major source of business traffic for me.

As an SEO consulting strategist, helping you understand how to optimize your WordPress site for SEO is important if you want to end up on the first page of Google. Here is a list of my top six search engine optimization tips for WordPress websites that will help you improve your SEO and start ranking on Google right away (after implementation).

Prior to switching my business focus to online marketing and SEO, I had focused on website design and branding. I figured everyone was a marketing strategist and it would be too much competition for me to find clients that needed help with understanding SEO and Online Marketing strategies.

To my surprise, I have had a lot of prospects tell me they didn’t know there was an option to be educated by coaching and walkthroughs, the various ways you can improve your online presence using your website for both an online business and a storefront. Lots of people use WordPress sites because they have been told it is easier to rank faster in Google in comparison to using Wix.com or Weebly.com. This is true as long as you are using a self-hosted WordPress site.

SEO Tip 1 | Add the Yoast Plugin and Add Key Words

Like I mentioned earlier, lots of people use WordPress sites so as to rank faster in Google. The real SEO benefit of using WordPress comes from select WordPress plugins like WordPress SEO by Yoast. This plugin is by far the most complete SEO solution that is available for WordPress. Here at The Web Silo Online Marketing we use the Yoast SEO plugin to improve our on-page SEO. With the Yoast SEO plugin, you can easily get some basic SEO analysis while writing content for your pages including blog posts as shown below. It will suggest various tasks:

SEO Tip 1 | Add the Yoast Plugin and Add Keywords

If you need ideas as to what keywords people are searching for in connection with your type of business or products you sell then, do some research using the Google Adwords Keyword Planner. While looking through the results, I suggest that you look out for the most frequently searched keywords with a medium to low competition rate to start with.

SEO Tip 2 | Page Title and SEO

Why is the page title important in SEO? Well, it’s the first thing your clients see when they search in Google, and the page title is also what Google uses to learn more about your business. You need to keep in mind the main goal of every page title:

  1. it must help you rank for your selected niche keyword;
  2. it must make your potential clients want to click through to learn more about what you do.

When writing your page title use as many keywords as possible here, while still keeping it short, sweet and to the point.

WordPress SEO Tip 3 | Add Page Descriptions

The purpose of a page description for your various website pages is simple: to get someone searching for your type of business on Google to click your link.

Make sure these descriptions include keywords that are relevant to the page you are editing.

Here are some examples of awesome meta descriptions:

The Web Silo Online Marketing: The Web Silo Online Marketing helps business owners grow online visibility, create custom website design, SEO services that gets you more leads and sales.

Square: “Square helps millions of sellers run their business- from secure credit card processing to point of sale solutions. Get paid faster with Square and sign up today!”

Instagram: “Create an account or log in to Instagram – A simple, fun & creative way to capture, edit & share photos, videos & messages with friends & family.”

WordPress SEO Tip 4 | Name all your Images and Add Captions

Rule of thumb when using any images on your site whether free or not, always make sure to rename your images. This is a very important step with search engine optimization. Don’t just leave your image titled freepic1234.jpg when you upload it to your site, renaming the images will give Google more ideas on what that page is talking about that you are loading it to.

Shea Glam Cosmetics Loose Mineral Powder Foundation
For example – the image above, “rename freepic1234.png” to “SheaGlamCosmeticsLooseMineralPowderFoundation.png” and attach a link

Once the images have been uploaded into your “media library” make sure to add a description, as this is another way for Google to help identify your images. This also gives you another way to add in relevant keywords.

WordPress SEO Tip 5 | Use H1, H2, and H3 Attributes when Appropriate

Check out the way I used the H1, H2, and H3 Attributes in this blog post – Do you know who visits your site?

Looking at my blog post, do you see how I break up my content with headers? It helps to do so for the following reasons:

  1. It make all posts easier to read,
  2. It helps with SEO,
  3. Google will prioritize your information within your posts by calling out important keywords and information to Google based on whether it is a header text or paragraph text.

WordPress SEO Tip 6 | Include your Address and Phone Number

It makes sense to have your business information added to your website so Google knows where you are located, but some business owners working out of their home or primarily online do not want to do so as they do not service clients at their location.

My suggestion would be to get a UPS Business address and not a P.O. Box address as this step is very important for SEO.

Depending on what niche you service, promoting your business with local searches will get you on the first page of Google faster.

Bonus Tip: Creating a Google My Business you can also show up in local searches easier.
